Now that the initial excitement and shock of becoming engaged has settled in, it’s actually time to start planning what may be one of the biggest days of your life – your wedding day! As you start attending bridal shows and reading all of those magazines and blogs, you will surely encounter tons of businesses vying for your support, wedding planners included. But before you consider making a commitment to a wedding planner, consider these common myths as to why NOT to hire one, and the reality.
"I’m on a tight budget. I don’t want to pay someone to do something that I can do on my own.”
Having a tight budget is even more reason to hire a wedding planner. A wedding planner is like a financial advisor who specializes in weddings. They know how much things should cost, what percentage of your budget should be spent in each area, and which vendors offer the best return on your investment. Unless you have lots of experience in the industry, it can be overwhelming to know what costs are reasonable and even necessary. Hiring an experienced wedding planner can be the best investment you make toward your wedding.
“I want to plan my own wedding – every single detail! “ OR
“My sister/friend/cousin/mom/aunt has done other weddings and is going to plan my wedding.”
Of course you want to plan your wedding! But you want the fun parts of planning your wedding, not the stressful, annoying, and sometimes crazy parts. You only want the help of those that ARE professionals or with proven success. With a wedding planner, you will still be involved in every aspect of the process if you’d like. A wedding planner will, however, spare you the drama that often occurs behind the scenes, and you will be able to actually enjoy your engagement and wedding day. We cannot tell you how many brides just want the day to be over because of all of the stress leading up to the wedding.
“My venue comes with a planner or offers all-inclusive services.”
Most venues have coordinators, but they aren’t wedding planners. They are there for the venue. They are there to handle logistical matters for the venue (like what appetizers you want served at cocktail hour, or when you want dinner to start). They won’t make appointments for you, help you design your entire wedding, assist you in choosing your stationery, or create a timeline for your entire wedding journey or day. They’re going to be there the day of your wedding, but they may not be around when you need them to bustle your dress or fix it if it breaks, hold your bouquet, tell you when to cut the cake, or put your overnight bags in the limo. In reality, most leave after the cake is cut.
Additionally, all-inclusive venues don’t have custom capabilities. They use specific vendors for their wedding-in-a-box offerings. If you want linens, tables, chairs, china, stationery, flowers/centerpieces or a DJ that is not on their vendor list, then you will be paying more. And the “credit” that they offer for not using the in-house vendor is nominal compared to the actual cost of a substitution.
“Don’t you JUST wanna have FUN?!”
A full-service planner handles it all (both design and coordination) from start to finish. This type of planner is great for couples who are having a complex event or simply want a professional to guide them every step of the way and to handle all the details of executing their vision. She is like an interior designer for your event. She will coordinate services with other vendors – from invitation designers to florists and bakers – to bring your vision to life based on the style, taste, and vision you've dreamed up, and she will handle the organization and logistics.
Busy brides and grooms turn to full-service planners to take off the pressure of planning a fabulous wedding and to make sure their wedding day looks amazing and runs smoothly. In the end, it's an investment that you will not regret!
